As more and more people are entering this amazing world of gaming it is quite obvious that someday or the other games would start getting broadcasted on TV as a separate channel just as there are channels for sports there would be channels for games. Infact that day is not very far it has already happened in South Korea two channels OnGameNet and MBCgame broadcast gaming 24 hour a day and it features anything from strategy to FPS games.
Now a days people and especially the big companies have started realizing that gaming can help them earn huge profits. This accounts for more and more companies employing the strategy of in-game advertising. Similarly the South Korean's have found even a better way that is through TV commercials that might be a major factor to air games on TV. Then why should U.S. be left behind when so much money is at stake ? Of course not! Thats where DIRECTV comes in.
At the CES (Consumer Electronics Show), DirecTV (NYSE: DTV) announced that it will be running a gaming league called the Championship Gaming Series and it will be comprised of teams from all over the world competing cash and prizes amounting to over $1 million. Not only will this series be available in the U.S., but DirecTV is in final discussions with British Sky Broadcasting (NYSE: BSY) and STAR Asia , as well as other networks, to deliver the action to the rest of the world. Outside of just broadcast coverage, DirecTV has also partnered with IGN to provide web coverage as well. And what more Johnathan “Fatal1ty” Wendel will be providing analysis and commentary.
The Championship Gaming Series is due out this spring.
